Junior Training:
Junior training takes place every Sunday at 10am at the clubhouse at Dawlish Warren and this year the club is successfully training more than 30 young people! The 'nippers' train throughout the year and will develop a good knowledge of the sea, open water environments and the associated hazards as well as staying safe in and around the water, they will also start to develop a knowledge of rescue techniques and strategies to assist in an emergency situation.
Throughout the year the nippers work towards various awards. We follow the RLSS water safety programs: Children from age 8 to 12 follow the Rookie Lifeguard scheme and when they reach age 12 they transfer to the Survive and Save program which ultimately leads onto the NVBLQ (Beach lifeguard qualification).
We help the nippers develop a range of skills for their 'skills toolbox', a resource that will enable them to competently assist during an emergency and save lives!
During the year the nippers engage in shore based training activities: life support award, defib training, first aid, hazard awareness, use of a radio etc. They also spend as much time as possible in the water using the nipper boards, surf rescue skis, rescue tubes and paddleboards.
